The unexpected journey

Good morning Planet Famers!

Once again, I missed my Sunday deadline! haha I apologize! This week, I actually have a legitimate reason though! I was a little preoccupied with getting ready for the 2018 NCAAD, National Conference on Alcohol & Addiction Disorders, being held at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim California! If you are in the area, and can come by, please do! Conference started yesterday, and goes until Wednesday. JDS Consulting Inc. Co-sponsored a booth in the KIPU Pavilion with Neuvaunt Corp.

ANYWAY! Back to the planet!

I want to talk about "The Unexpected Journey" this week. First, I should start by explaining what I mean by that. When we are kids, at certain points in our lives, we get asked what we want to be when we grow up. Then as we get older, we get asked again at various different points in our development,  junior high, high school, college, and so on. Some of us, though admittedly few, give the same answer throughout our development. I am reminded of my mom telling me about her cousin. She wanted to be a pharmacist for as long as my mom can remember...and guess what? She ACTUALLY became a pharmacist! Freaky, right?! HAHA It does happen though!

Most of us however, maybe list 2-3 things that we would like to be, and those things tend to change as we get older. Maybe 1 of the 3 things we wanted to be at age 8, makes it to high school or even college. For the vast majority though, what we wanted to be when we were 8, has nothing in common with what we want to do at 18.

Then of course, there is the ultimate "x-factor" that plays a part in our future...LIFE! Life happens to us, or rather with us, and we learn new things. We experience new things. Some of them good, and some of them bad. Through the experiences of life, the actions we take, the choices we make, and yes even the things that happen to us outside our control or even knowledge have an impact on our lives and where, and who we want to be.

Personally, I remember as a child I wanted to be a marine biologist. Then when swimming was going so great I wanted to be an olympic athlete. After that I wanted to be in advertising, then a therapist, and now I own an insurance billing and consulting firm! Talk about "unexpected"! I hated math and numbers my entire childhood! Hell...I still don't like them! Here I am though.

Now, if you were to ask me "what I want to do when I grow up?", my answer would simple be: "I don't know, but I can't wait to find out!"

My point in telling you all of this, is that life is more often than not, an unexpected journey. That's ok! You don't have to know who you want to be when you grow up! Some of us are fortunate enough to have the vision their entire lives. They simply know what they want to do and who they want to be, almost from day one. That's wonderful for them! I tend to think that it would almost be a little boring...I mean, knowing the final chapter of a book, before you even start? Seems to take some of the fun out of the experience for me. That's a personal opinion though.

So don't stress too much if you don't know who you want to be, or what you want to do yet. Most of the interesting people I know in their 60's, still don't know!

I would also throw out to you, the idea of living your life with no regrets. What I mean by that, is that while we are human and make mistakes (which are part of being human), each decision, action, and choice we make, brings us a little further along in our journey. You should always try to do the right things, make the good choices, and live your life in a positive way. We also need to understand that we learn from our mistakes! One, or a series, of bad choices doesn't ultimately make you a bad person. If you take those negatives, and use them to make yourself better. If you learn from them, and they help you become a better person, then they have served a purpose in your life.

I have made a lot of mistakes in my life. Yet if it wasn't for those mistakes, I would not be where I am today. I wouldn't give up where, and who, I am today for anything in the world! I truly believe, we are not our mistakes! We are what we do after them!

Life, to me, is the ultimate unexpected journey. We don't have to know where we are going, as long as we are growing along the way.

Until next time, wherever you are in your journey, just keep going!
